Emily Mac Postnatal Support

Nurturing Wellbeing, Empowering Mothers

The transition to motherhood can be tough, often leaving new mums feeling overwhelmed. In the past we would have extended family around us when we had a baby, allowing us time to heal and recover, but this is rarely the case anymore.

Our families might not be close, our friends may be busy, social media can make us feel that everyone else has it together more than we do. You can end up feeling isolated and lost.

My hope is to empower the new mums I work with to feel nurtured and valued, to feel confident and connected in their parenting, and to give their babies the best start for an emotionally secure and healthy life.

I want to make a difference by offering emotional, practical, and wellbeing support for women in the postpartum period.

If you or someone you know is a new mum wanting a helping hand, please don't hesitate to reach out.

About Me

I’m Emily, I have been a mental health nurse for over 20 years, with experience across a variety of fields in the NHS – adolescent inpatient services, acute adult wards, early intervention for psychosis in the community, working alongside GPs in the primary care mental health service, as well as over 6 years in the community perinatal team.

Me and my husband Ian have three daughters, and a huge labradoodle. Alongside taking the girls to various clubs and social events, and walking the dog, I also love weightlifting, pilates, and very strong cups of tea!

I discovered my passion for supporting mums and babies during my time in the perinatal team, as well as through my own experiences of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. I realised that there is a huge gap in provision for women who aren’t finding the transition to motherhood easy, but who are not needing specialist mental health services.

I am setting out to help new mums to feel confident, I want you to feel nurtured, empowered and valued. I want to support you to enjoy all the lovely parts of having a new baby, but also develop the skills to manage the difficult times.

I don’t want you to feel you have to battle on alone. And I feel passionately about giving babies the best start in life to grow into emotionally healthy children and adults.

Social connection, my family, health and nature are all very important to me, and these values underpin everything I do. I have spent time over the past few years prioritising my own mental and physical wellbeing, a big part of that is being outside in nature.

I have completed training in cognitive behavioural therapy with depression, dialectical behavioural therapy skills, perinatal training for specialist teams, brief solution focussed therapy, brief psychological interventions, Watch, Wait and Wonder, Developing Doulas preparation course, amongst others.

My favourite quotes

"We don’t lose ourselves in parenthood. We find parts of ourselves we never knew existed.”

L.R. Knost

"Don’t stand unmoving outside the door of a crying baby whose only desire is to touch you. Go to your baby. Go to your baby a million times. Demonstrate that people can be trusted, that the environment can be trusted, that we live in a benign universe.”

Peggy O’Mara
